The Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God in three persons—is often considered to be mysterious at best, self-contradicting at worst. Everyone would acknowledge that the idea of a triune God—three in one—is the most difficult of all Christian doctrines, which is why so many neglect it or even write it off. But this is tragic. As St. Caesarius of Arles said in the sixth century, “The faith of all Christians rests on the Trinity.” While the Trinity transcends the bounds of human understanding, this doctrine is at the heart of Christian spirituality, and in the life of faith we experience its truth at every turn. Understanding the doctrine of the Trinity is especially timely in today’s titanic clash of civilizations when, for example, some Muslim activists contend that the Trinity is a form of idolatry and that Christianity is a form of polytheism—the worship of more than one God—in disguise.

1 What are some ways you have heard the Trinity explained? How would you begin to explain or defend the three-in-one nature of the Christian God to someone of another religion?

[Your Response]

2 What are the advantages for Christians to be able to explain or defend the concept of the Trinity? What are the potential consequences for those who cannot?

[Your Response]

The Trinity—God Above, God Beside, God Within

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28:18–20
